Swim Safe This Summer

July 2025 — As summer temperatures begin to rise in the Treasure Valley, it’s common for families to head to pools, lakes, and water parks to cool off. While swimming is a favorite summer pastime, it’s important to remember that water safety should always come first, especially for kids. According to the CDC, drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 4 in the United States, and even nonfatal drowning incidents can lead to serious health complications. Fortunately, there are many ways to enjoy the water while staying safe.

The CDC reports that formal swim lessons can significantly reduce the risk of drowning. In Boise, several places offer swim instruction for a wide range of ages and skill levels. Boise Parks and Recreation provides group swim lessons at all city outdoor pools throughout the summer, with classes starting as young as age 2 (with a parent in the water) and progressive skill-level classes for kids ages 4 and up.

Other great local options include:

Treasure Valley YMCA
With locations in Downtown Boise, West Boise, Caldwell and South Meridian, the YMCA offers year-round lessons beginning at just 6 months old. They also provide an AquAbility program that supports children with adaptive needs, and their Safety Around Water Program focuses on teaching basic water survival skills, helping reduce the risk of drowning while promoting comfort and confidence in the water.

Goldfish Swim School
With locations in both Boise and Nampa, the Goldfish Swim School offers a skill-based curriculum that begins at just 4 months old. Their lessons prioritize water safety by starting with the basics before gradually advancing to stroke techniques and endurance-building exercises, all in a playful and encouraging environment designed for kids.

Roaring Springs Water Park – Little Splash Swim Lessons
Roaring Springs provides two-week sessions for children ages 3 to 12. These classes are typically held before the park opens and emphasize water safety, floating, and stroke development, making them a convenient option for families already planning summer fun at the water park.

Water Wings Swim School
Located in Boise, Eagle, and Nampa, Water Wings Swim School offers both group and private swim lessons for children as young as 4 months old. Their flexible scheduling and multiple class options throughout the week make it easy for busy families to find a time that works.

American Red Cross-Approved Programs
American Red Cross approved programs can also be found through community centers and select private instructors. Most of these programs begin around 6 months of age and follow nationally recognized safety standards. American Red Cross also offers CPR and First Aid certification course for adults, as well as lifeguard training for teens, which can be invaluable skills for any family spending time around water.

No matter where your summer adventures take you, it’s essential to prioritize water safety. Always keep a close eye on children in or near water, and stay within arm’s reach of young or inexperienced swimmers. Life jackets are also critical for kids and weaker swimmers when in open water, even if they seem confident. Drowning can happen quickly and quietly, so it’s important to recognize the signs and stay vigilant. Take regular breaks, stay hydrated in the heat, and consider learning CPR as it could make all the difference in an emergency.

Swimming is a great way to stay active and have fun as a family, but preparation is key. With a few simple precautions, you can make this summer both safe and memorable. If you or your child experience a water-related injury or illness, our urgent care clinics are here to help.
